Prijsvraag theater Praag

The design competition for a World theatre in Prague demanded the creation of theatre space in a former industrial building, on a site linked to a route from an underground station to an exhibition and entertainment park. History has proven that in totally flexible auditoria most often only one or two of all possible positions are used. We have thus chosen to construct a classical theatre, because of the direct (visual) contact between both actors and audience, and amongst the members of the audience themselves. Theatre makers want to find challenge in the sites they work on. Important is the atmosphere and character of these sites. The existing industrial building, with its surplus of space, forms an ideal background for performances. To strenghten the visual and physical connection between route and building, performance areas are taken out of the building and transparent constructions are used to invite passers-by to look into the building.
